CRETE, NE - Graceland University counted a goal 20 seconds into the second overtime period, as the Yellowjackets defeated Doane University 2-1 on the road.
At the start of the contest, Doane and Graceland worked to get in a rhythm and control the possession of the ball. The Tigers were the first to make it on the score board, as DU's Josh Bundy connected with Daniel Maganda in the 23rd minute.
The Jackets battled to get deep in the Tigers end, earning a corner kick. Abraham DeAnda sent the ball in to the box, which eventually made it back out to him. After crossing it into the mix again, Zachary Ferrara put a head on the ball sending into the goal and past the keeper. Graceland evened the contest at 1-1 in the 37th minute of the first half.
Graceland produced chances and shots in the second half, moving the ball quickly around the field. The Jackets controlled the tempo and pressed high creating chances. Graceland marked numerous shots in the final minutes of regulation, but the ball didn't bounce their way. Graceland and Doane then entered the first overtime period.
Much like the second half, the Jackets created chances to score, but the Tigers held firm. After the first overtime period the score remained tied at 1-1.
Coming out the break, just seconds into the second overtime period, Joao Luis Holtskog Aguiar came up with a great tackle in the middle, starting the Jackets on a counter attack. Holtskog Aguiar played the ball to Jose Maria Ruiz Gomez who cut the ball to the middle, playing the ball to Joachim Kikuni. Kikuni was able to turn n the last defender and put himself in a one-on-one with the keeper. He finished low to the corner. Graceland took the contest 1-1.
The Yellowjackets outshot the Tigers 31-11, including 17-2 for shots on goal. Robbert Turk totaled four shots on goal in the contest. Guillermo Laguna Rodriguez and Kukuni added three shots on frame each. In goal, Liam Smith posted three saved.
The men's soccer team will next play on Saturday, August 9 in Lamoni, IA against Concordia University (NE).
