LAWRENCE - Graceland University drops a five-set nail-biter to Haskell Indian Nations University.
The Yellowjackets have now dropped their second match in a row, falling to 4-2 on the year. The Indians have improved to 2-3.
"The game was a genuine burner between two well matched teams," said Stew McDole, head coach. "The season is young and a good match to play."
Graceland began the match and first set, moving ahead 7-5 after a kill by MacKenzie Edmundson from Sam Schell. Haskell tied the match quickly at 10-10. From there, the largest margin would be three points. GU reached set point first at 24-21, HINU didn't fold evening the contest at 24-24. The Jackets counted the next two points to win the first 26-24.
In the second set of the night, the score went back and forth, with neither team able to break away from the other. Graceland struggled to put the ball on the floor, falling 26-24.
The third set was much like the first two sets, as the teams exchanged points back and forth in a hard fought battle. Haskell obtained a three-point advantage at 13-10, before Graceland sided out and continued to score the next five points to lead at 16-13. With the set tied at 21-21, GU scored four of the final five points to claim the third 25-22.
Haskell moved ahead of Graceland quickly in the fourth, obtaining a 7-2 edge. The Jackets slashed the deficit to two at 13-11, before ultimately tying the set at 14-14. Points went back-and-forth between the teams. HINU gained a four-point separation (21-17) and held on the rest of the way to win 25-21 and force a decisive fifth set.
In the fifth and final set, Haskell led at 13-9. Graceland was relentless, battling back to tie the game at 14's. Unable to pull out the final points, the Indians took the match 17-15.
Emma Runyan led the Yellowjackets offensively with 18 kills. Hanna Farley added 11 kills on the night. Stephanie Herman, Emree Sato and Sam Schell set the tempo, producing 22, 11 and nine assists, respectively. Defensively, MacKenzie Rieth accumulated six digs.
The Indians offense was propelled by the duo of Cailey Lujan and Alliyah Richards with 14 and 12 kills, respectively. Setters Randi Romero and Shayla Yazzie dished out a combined 29 of the team's 37 assists. Defensively, Krista Costa counted a team-high 12 digs.
Women's volleyball will continue on the road, facing Clarke University on Tuesday, Sept. 5 in Dubuque, IA.
