LAMONI, IA - Megan Kimrey scored two goals in Graceland University's 5-0 victory over Simpson College on Tuesday.
"Coming off a really hard, but rewarding weekend made tonight's game a potential banana skin in terms of crashing mentally," remarked Ozzie White, head coach. " We showed a psychological toughness by playing well and scoring some goals in the process. We have a long way to go, bu the early signs are encouraging."
The Yellowjackets (2-0-1) worked to apply pressure on Simpson. Just 17 minutes into the game, a ball was crossed into the box by a Graceland player. Simpson went to clear the ball, but ended up going in their own goal. Graceland led 1-0 before striking again. The Jackets worked to play in combination, as Suzune Sato connected with Megan Kimrey who buried a shot in the back of the net at the 25-minute mark. GU maintained the majority of possession the rest of the half, leading 2-0 at the break.
Following halftime, the Jackets took three quick shots in the opening five minutes of the half. Then in the 56th minute, the Jackets earned a corner kick. After the kick, Graceland won the ball back and was able to keep it in Simpsons end. Hannah Hiner then served the ball into the box, Aubrey Sesker connected on a half volley to push the score to 3-0.
Two minutes later, the Yellowjackets offense struck again. A ball was sent over a very high Simpson backline. Soleya Fugeroa ran onto the ball, collected it, before placing it in the goal. After 58 minute of play, Graceland moved ahead 4-0.
Graceland's offense didn't slow down, with the Jackets continuing to press forward. Again another ball was served over the Storm backline. Megan Kimrey ran onto it before scoring her second goal of the night with 12 minutes to go in the contest. Graceland shut out Simpson College in a 5-0 victory.
The Yellowjackets outshot Simpson College 21-2 in the game and earned four corner kicks. Manaia Siania Unutoa and Alexis Ebensberger combined for the shutout. Kimrey counted three shots in the game, placing all on target to score two goals. Other Gracleand goals the contest came from Aubrey Sesker and Soleya Figueroa.
