LAMONI, IA – Graceland University Director of Athletics, Joe Worlund, has announced that he will transition from his current position into the Development Office at Graceland. With an expansion of the development team, Worlund will serve as Director of Development.
"After three years of leading intercollegiate athletics at Graceland University, it is time for me to move to a different chapter of my professional life," Worlund said. "This is a great university. I am honored to have the opportunity to continue my service in another venue, and to continue to contribute in a variety of other ways."
Worlund has served as the athletics director since the fall of 2014. He has steered the Graceland Athletics Department through significant changes, and his leadership garnered success on and off the field with student-athletes and coaches.
Upon his arrival, the 1980 Graceland grad created and now sponsors the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). He has also served as the Heart of America Athletic Conference liaison for volleyball.
Under his guidance, over 150 student-athletes have received scholar-athlete awards, while 75+ have received All-Conference accolades.
During his tenure, the cheer and men's volleyball teams went to nationals, while cross country and track and field sent individual competitors to nationals as well. Graceland Athletics also saw the first NAIA DI men's basketball ranking in program history.
"As a development officer, I will be able to increase the visibility and support of Graceland's presence with not only alumni, but with the contacts I've made in athletics," stated Worlund. "I'm looking forward to the new challenge."
"Graceland needs to expand the development team," Kelly Everett, Vice President for Institutional Advancement, commented, "and Joe is the perfect fit. We are really excited to have him join us. His years of experience in the athletic realm will be advantageous for his success, and Graceland will benefit from his associations."
Worlund will begin his new role effective June 1. A national search for the next Graceland University Director of Athletics will begin immediately.
The full-time, 12-month position reports to the Vice President for Enrollment Management. This person will collaborate with enrollment management to improve recruiting and retention of student-athletes. Graceland is looking for someone with a strong commitment to the academic mission of the institution, a strong background in fiscal management, strong leadership skills and evidence of previous successful fundraising, recruiting and retaining student-athletes. Graceland is an NAIA school in the Heart of America Athletic Conference.
