OZARK, MO - Graceland University's baseball season ended at the Heart of America Athletic Conference Tournament.
In the nine-inning, single-elimination game, Avila University defeated Graceland 11-7.
The first inning went quickly, as did the top of the second.
In bottom of the second, Avila led off the inning with a pair of singles. A sac bunt and another single, helped to score a run and put the Eagles ahead. Before the second inning ended, Avila would produce two more hits and runs to lead 3-0.
Moving into the top of the third, Graceland answered. Andrew Maxson led off the inning with a single to right field. Then with one out, Gage Sanchez reached on an error, as Ediberto Rodriguez (pinch running for Maxson) reached third. Then on a double steal, the run scored.
Colton Ranney was then hit by a pitch, placing runners on first and second. With two outs, the designated hitter, Jose Martinez, singled to center. Sanchez and Ranny both advanced home on an error to tie the game at 3-3.
Then in the top of the fourth, the first batter, Alex Madera reached after being hit by a pitch. With two outs, Gage Sanchez drove home the run with his shot to center. GU led 4-3 after three and a half innings.
Avila had an answer in the fifth. Despite only producing two singles, the Eagles took advantage of two walks, a hit batter and an error. AU moved ahead 8-5 through the fifth inning.
In the sixth, Graceland put a runner on second base after a wild throw. During the next at bat, the run would score on a hit. GU trailed 8-5 after six innings.
The Eagles pushed the margin to four in the seventh (9-5). Then in the eighth, Madera led off with a double to deep left-center. The second batter, Maxson then stepped up to the plate, driving home Madera with a single to right-center. The score 9-6.
Avila was able to record two more runs in the bottom of the eight, extending the lead to six at 11-5.
In the ninth, the first two Graceland batters reached base with a single and a walk. Later with one out, a single scored one run. Unable to continue the momentum, Graceland fell 11-7.
Avila outhit Graceland 14-10 in the contest. Anrew Maxson led the Yellowjackets going 3-for 4 in the contest with a double. Maxson recoded two RBI's. Sebastian Guillen counted two singles, while Jose Martines, Corey Harrell, Orangel Medina, Alex Madera and Gage Sanchez each added a hit.
Axl Parra started on the hill for Graceland. He went five innings, allowing nine hits, walking four and striking out two. Jorge Michael pitched two innings in relief, while Dakota Graham added one inning. Parra suffered the loss.
Graceland ended the season with a 19-34 mark overall on the season and were 12-20 in the Heart. The Jackets finished fifth in the North Division and entered post season play.
