PEOSTA, IA – Graceland University split a pair of games with No. 11 Clarke University to close the series at AJ Spiegel Park in Peosta, IA. Clarke claimed the overall series 3-1. The Yellowjackets are now 13-27 overall, owning a 7-15 mark in the Heart of America Athletic Conference.
Graceland started the second day, shutting out Clarke 7-0 in game one. Then in the second game, the Crusaders regrouped defeating Graceland 7-4.
The first two innings quickly passed. Then in the top of the third with one out, Gage Sanchez reached on an error. Then with two outs, Sebastian Guillen homered over the right field fence, giving Graceland a 2-0 lead.
Clarke tabbed a single hit to lead off the bottom half of the inning, but Graceland quickly got the next three batters out.
In the top of the fourth, Graceland's second batter, Logan Bima, reached after being hit by a pitch. He then moved to second on a wild pitch. Then with two outs, Alex Madera singles to left field, driving home the base runner. Parker Reynolds then drew a walk, keeping the Yellowjackets at bat alive. Gage Sanchez then stepped up to the plate sending a single to right field, scoring, Madera. GU led 4-0 at the end of the top of the fourth.
Again in the bottom half of the inning, the Crusaders led off with a single. Back-to-back strikeouts, along with a fly out ended the inning.
Sebastian Guillen led off the fifth with a single to pitcher for the Yellowjackets. Then with two outs, Logan Bima recorded a two-run bomb over the right field fence. GU moved ahead 6-0 after four and half innings.
The Crusader's second batter of the inning, drew a walk and advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches. Graceland worked themselves out of the jam, keeping Clarke off the board.
The Yellowjackets received a double from Sanchez and a single from Guillen in the sixth. Graceland tabbed a solo run in the inning to lead 7-0.
Graceland finished the contest strong, defeating Clarke 7-0.
The Yellowjackets recorded nine hits, compared to the Crusaders three in the contest. Guillen led the way going 3-for-4 including a two-run homerun. Sanchez posted two hits out of three appearances at the plate including a double. Bima added a two-run homerun of his own as Orangel Medina tabbed a double.
Axl Parra pitched his second complete game of the week. He allowed just three hits, striking out seven and walking one.
Gracleand received hits from Guillen and Median in the first inning, but were unable to get on the board. In the latter half of the inning, Clarke produced three singles, taking advantage of an error to move ahead early at 3-0.
The Crusaders struck again in the second, as the second batter singled, before the third reached on an error. A pair of doubles followed as another three runs were counted to give Clarke a 6-0 lead early in the game.
Clarke added another two runs with a two-run homerun in the bottom of the third to lead 8-0.
Graceland looked to turn things around in the fourth, as Orangel Medina led off the Yellowjackets with a hit to shortstop. Bima was then hit by a pitch, before Andrew Maxson's single to left field loaded the bases. With one out, Reynolds doubled driving in two run. Then with two outs, the Yellowjackets scored two more runs on Colton Ranney's single through the right side gap. GU brought the score to 6-4.
The fifth came and went with the blink of an eye. Clarke counted another run in the bottom of the sixth to take a 10-4 lead. Graceland was kept at bay in the seventh, falling 10-4.
Clarke outhit Graceland 13-8 in the second game of the day. Dakota Graham, Cody Guiterrez and Omar Maldonado each pitched two innings for GU. Graham suffered the loss. The Crusader's Austin Gehl led the team going 4-for-4 at the plate.
Orangel Medina went 2-for-2 in the game, as Sebastian Guillen was 2-for-4. Parker Reynolds counted the only extra base hit of the game with a double. Colton Ranney, Andrew Maxson, and Alex Madera also contributed hits.
The Yellowjackets will host MidAmerica Nazarene University in a two-game series cross-over Heart of America Athletic Conference contest.
