"We didn't shoot the ball well, but we defended for 30 minutes and we controlled the paint on offense and on the glass," said Craig Doty, Head Coach. "It is nice to create some positive energy heading into the post season."
The two team's exchange points back-and-forth to start. With the score tied at 6-6, Graceland (19-11, 16-10 Heart) went on a 11-0 run to go ahead 17-6. Midway through the contest, Jeremy Deemer kissed the glass to extend the Jacket's margin to 17 (29-13). Graceland went on to hold a 39-29 lead at the break.
The Yellowjackets led by double-figures for the beginning of the half. With 13:05 remaining the Eagles, slashed the deficit to five points. A put-back by Deemer followed by three free-throws from LT Davis pushed the margin back to 10 (50-40). Five minutes later, Graceland's edge was limited to four points at 52-48. With 2:43 remaining, LT Davis connected with Cimino who converted on a three-point play to give the Jackets a 10-point lead. Graceland stayed in control the rest of the way, defeating Avila 77-59.
Graceland University went 25-for-63 (39.7 percent) from the floor, struggling from beyond the arc shooting 17.6 percent (6-for-34). Avila University went 21-of-55 (38.2 percent) from the field, including 7-of-26 from three-point (26.9 percent). The Jackets counted 21 points off of turnovers and held a +13 rebounding margin.
Frank Cimino continued to be a threat, scoring 23 points, while going 8-for-17 from the floor. Jeremy Deemer contributed 22 points, while Carl Martin added 11 points. RJ Williams pulled down a team-high nine rebounds. Martin and Davis dished out five assists each.
The Eagles were led by Trey Bales with 18 points. Shandon Boone also scored in double-figures, adding 11. Aaron Ward grabbed seven boards.
The men's basketball team has made it into the Heart of America Athletic Conference tournament. The Jackets will play at Benedictine College on Thursday, March 2. Game is slated for 7 p.m.
