LAMONI, IA – On senior night, three seniors scored in double figures as Graceland University fell to Baker University 91-86.
The Jackets (18-11, 15-10 Heart) first points of the night were scored on an alley-oop dunk by RJ Williams off a pass from Ben Grygiel. Graceland used the momentum to take off on a 9-2 run and lead at 11-4. GU pushed the margin to 11 (20-9) following a field goal by LT Davis. Baker then changes gears, using a 17-0 run to go ahead 32-23 with 6:16 left in the first half. The Jackets trailed 40-39 at the break.
After halftime, the team's exchange baskets back-and-forth. Then the Wildcats took off using a 15-2 run to hold the advantage at 61-48. Slowly, Graceland chipped away at BU's lead. Carl Martin's trey from the right wing, brought the score to within seven (65-58), 9:02 remained.
Then with 4:45 to play, Carl Martin found Frank Cimino who splashed a three-ball from the top of the key. The bucket slashed BU's edge to three. Over the next three minutes, a three-point play by Jeremy Deemer and triples by Carl Martin and Frank CImino tied the contest at 81-all with two minutes to play.
Back-to-back baskets by the Wildcats followed pushing the margin back to five with 35 seconds remaining. Baker held on and defeated Graceland 91-86.
Baker University shot 55 percent from the floor (27-49) tonight, while Graceland University shot 48 percent (30-62). The Wildcats went 29-for-35 from the foul line, while the Jackets went 11-for-20. GU sank 15 triples on the night.
Baker also had four players mark double-figures. The Wildcats were led by Javeion Gray who totaled 26 points. He went 14-of-17 from the charity line. Tyree Peter completed a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds.
Head Coach Craig Doty said, "I want to thank our five seniors for their contributions to Graceland. This season they helped lead our program to its first NAIA national ranking in 19 years and 11 months. We have been receiving votes in the national poll or nationally ranked for a majority of the season. This is a credit to our entire team, but especially our seniors. Tonight, we thank them and honor them for their commitment to our program and our great university."
Men's basketball will complete conference play on Saturday at Avila University. The game is set for 2 p.m.
