LAMONI, Iowa – Carl Martin and Jordan Dembley combined for 35 points tonight, but Graceland University came up short on their home court against Clarke University. Clarke claimed the Heart of America Athletic Conference contest 79-72, improving to 8-13 on the year (6-11 Heart). The Jackets fell to 14-8 and 11-7 in the Heart.
Head Coach Craig Doty stated, "We played an okay game of basketball tonight. Clarke played inspired, they made shots, and they executed down the stretch. If we want to win college basketball games, we have to play every possession with a sense of urgency."
GU started out the night strong, holding the 13-5 advantage just five minutes into the contest. Midway through the first half, Ben Grygiel splashed a triple to extend the Jackets margin to nine points (19-10). A couple minutes later, Graceland obtained their largest lead of the half (12 points).
With 4:42, Dylan Martin knocked down a field (28-20). Momentum quickly swung out of the Jackets favor, as Clarke scored the next six points to cut the margin to one. The contest remained close the rest of the half, as Graceland led 36-34 at the break.
Minutes into the second half, Clarke obtained their first lead of the contest (39-38) and from there the score remained close. CU led by four multiple times, before going ahead by six points (60-54) with 7:20 to play in the contest.
Late in the half (3:44), C. Martin sank a trey to tie the ball-game at 65-all. Soon, the Crusaders led by seven with 1:11 to go. Martin again buried a triple, cutting the margin to four. Unable to take the lead, CU went on to take the game 79-72.
Clarke University knocked down 27-of-51 from the floor tonight (52.3 percent), including 9-of-20 from beyond the arc. Graceland was held to 22-of-66 (43.9 percent), and struggled from three -- shooting just 27.8 percent (10-36). The teams were dead even with rebounding, each pulling down 32. GU grabbed 13 from the offensive glass.
C. Martin led the Jackets with 19 points on the night, adding five steals and four assists. Dembley contributed 16 off the bench, going 7-for-9 from the floor. Deemer rounded out the double-figures, contributing 11 points. RJ Williams grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
Haris Takes and Zack Fields led the Crusaders with 22 and 20 points, respectively. Tyler Meier contributed 16 points, while Ernest Bolden Jr. added 10 points. Takes and Avery Butler pulled down six rebounds each.
Men's basketball will continue at home on Thursday, when Central Methodist University comes to town. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
