LAMONI, Iowa – It was a complete team effort performance tonight in Graceland University's 73-47 victory over Avila University.
The win lifts Graceland to 13-6 (10-5 Heart), dropping Avila to 3-16 on the year and 3-12 in conference.
Head Coach Craig Doty said, "We rebounded and defended incredibly well tonight and that allowed us to take control of the game, even though we didn't shoot it well."
The Jackets got off to a hot start, scoring the first 8 points of the night. Graceland pushed the score to 14-4, seven minutes into the first half. GU would then remain scoreless for the next six minutes, until LT Davis counted a bucket (16-8). Momentum continued to be in favor of GU as they pushed their lead to as many as 16 before the break. At halftime, Graceland led 32-19.
Five minutes into the second half, Warren Goulbourne counted a dunk off a pass from RJ Williams to push the lead back to 16 points (41-25). Midway through the second half, Jordan Dembley came up with a steal and set up RJ William for the alley-oop. William's score moved the lead to 22 points. GU remained in control the rest of the contest extending the margin to as many as 26. Graceland defeated Heart conference foe, Avila, 73-47 on their home court.
Graceland University knocked down 27-of-70 shots tonight (38.6 percent), while Avila was held to 17-of-60 shooting (28.3 percent). GU produced 18 assists and held a +18 rebounding margin. The Jackets grabbed 14 offensive boards and came up with eight steals.
LT Davis and RJ Williams came off the bench to spark Graceland's offense. The duo score 13 and 12 points, respectively. Frank Cimino and Dylan Martin added eight points each, while four other players recorded six. Cimino pulled down a game high 10 rebounds, as Jordan Dembley dished out four assists.
The Eagle offense was highlighted by Devin Spencer with 15 points off the bench. No other Avila player scored more than six points. Spencer also led the team with eight rebounds.
Men's basketball continues conference play on the road at Evangel University. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
