LAMONI, Iowa - Carl Martin surpassed 1,000 career points tonight in (24) Graceland University's 80-69 win over (17) Grand View University at home.
With the win, Graceland has moved to 12-6 overall and 9-5 in conference play. Grand View has dropped to 11-5 and 10-4 in the Heart.
"Our guys responded to the energy from our best crowd of the season and really picked up their play," stated Head Coach Craig Doty. "Carl (Martin) was incredible and we guarded tonight. Most impressively, we dominated rebounding which allowed for us to secure the biggest win of the season.
Graceland started out the night strong, going a head 15-9 after Will Nelson found Warren Goulbourne under the basket, nine minutes into the first half. Four minutes later, Grand View took the lead on a bucket by Jjuan Hadnot, but LT Davis gave the Jackets the edge back on the next possession. Before the break, Graceland was able to extend the margin to 10 points, holding a 41-31 advantage.
Early into the second half, the lead was stretched to 12 following a jumper by Carl Martin. With 12:07 on the clock, LT Davis sank a huge trey to give the Jackets a nine-point advantage. The Vikings looked to threaten, cutting the margin to just two points (70-68) with 2:34 left in regulation. Graceland responded scoring the next six points to rebuild the buffer. GU went on to win 80-69.
Graceland University shot 46.7 percent (28-60) from the floor tonight, while Grand View University was held to 39.3 percent (24-61). GU knocked down 10 triples, while going 14-for-17 from the charity line. The Jackets out rebounded the Vikings 48-28.
Carl Martin splashed 30 points tonight, surpassing 1,000 career points. He now has 1,015 total points. Martin also dished out five assists.
Kerry Green led the Vikings with 14 points. Chase Mullen, Alex Welsch, and Nate Washington each added 11. Jjuan Hadnot led the team with seven rebounds.
The men's basketball team will play at home again on Monday, January 23 when the Jackets host Avila University at 7:30 p.m.
