ATCHISON, Kan. - LT Davis scored 20+ points for the second consecutive game, as (24) Graceland University was overtaken on the road, 67-64, by (RV) Benedictine College.
The loss puts the Jackets at 11-6 on the year and 8-5 in the Heart. The Ravens have moved to 12-6 overall and 9-5 in conference play.
Head Coach Craig Doty had the following to say about the contest, "We played well in spurts, but we need to find a way to play for 40 minutes. Benedictine is one of the best teams in the conference. We felt we slowed their offense down with multiple defense looks, but unfortunately it wasn't enough."
Five minutes into the contest, Ben Grygiel's jumper cut the Ravens lead to three at 11-8. However, an 8-0 run by BC pushed the score to 19-8 midway through the first half. Graceland used a series of runs, before a basket in the paint by RJ Williams brought the contest to 26-23 with three minutes reaming in the half. Benedictine went into the break ahead of Graceland 32-26.
Early in the second half, Graceland took a one-point lead (33-32), before momentum swung the other way and BC went ahead by 11 points at 45-34 with 12:43 on the clock. GU continued to battle, bringing the score to within six points (59-53), as 2:15 remained in the contest.
GU and BC made it interesting to the end, as LT Davis drained a three-pointer with 11 seconds to go, bringing score to 64-63. Quickly the Jackets fouled, sending Andre Yates to the line. He went 1-for-2 from the charity to give his team a two point edge with 10 seconds on the clock. A turnover by GU late gave the ball back to the Ravens who won the contest 67-63.
Graceland shot 39.6 percent (21-53) from the floor tonight, as Benedictine shot 40.7 percent (22-54). Both teams knocked down seven triples, with GU holding a +5 rebounding margin. The Jackets went 14-for-16 from the foul line, as the Ravens hit 16-of-23. GU was plagued with 17 turnovers on the night.
LT Davis continues to be a bright spot off the bench, scoring 20+ points for the second game in a row. Davis was the only double-figure scorer tonight, recording 24 points and pulling down a team-high six rebounds. RJ Williams added eight points and five rebounds.
Three players counted double-figures for the Ravens. Andre Yates led the way with 22 points. Thomas O'Connor and AJ Goss each contributed 12 and 11 points, respectively.
The men's basketball team returns home on Saturday, January 21. GU will host (17) Grand View University at 4 p.m.
