BALDWIN CITY, Mo. - LT Davis and Jeremy Deemer combined for 51 points tonight in Graceland University's 81-79 victory over Baker University.
The Jackets have now jumped to 11-5 overall and are 8-4 in the Heart of America Athletic Conference.
Head Coach Craig Doty said,"It was nice to see our guys successfully battle back from a double-digit second half deficit. Jordan made some key plays and LT and Jeremy put us on their backs. We need to find a way to defend for 40 minutes so we don't dig ourselves a hole."
As the night began, the two teams exchanged baskets back-and-forth, before a 13-2 run gave the Wildcats the edge at 23-13. Just over halfway through the first period, Baker pushed the lead to 12 points at 28-16. Graceland kept battling, knocking the deficit to two with five minutes remaining. Baker continued to hold the edge at the break, extending the lead back to seven, the score 43-36.
The Jackets got off to a slow start in the second half, as they trailed by 15 points just minutes into period. With the Wildcats in the lead 60-51, LT Davis splashed a triple and Jordan Dembley sank three free-throws to cut the BU advantage to three midway through. The Jackets went on to outscore the Wildcats 8-2 and regain the upper hand.For the final seven minutes of the half, no team led by more than four points.
With 48 seconds remaining, Baker led by one, before LT Davis went 2-for-2 from the charity line to take the lead with 40 seconds remaining. Davis went on to count five more free-throws as the Yellowjackets took home the 81-78 win on the road.
Doty continued with,"LT is special he has the unique ability of being able to take over games. We feel like we have five or six guys that can do this on any given night. We have a special group."
Graceland University shot 46.6 percent (27-58) from the floor, while Baker University shot 43.9 percent (25-57). GU scored 19 second chance points and held a +8 rebounding margin.
LT Davis came off the bench to highlight Graceland's offense with 29 points. He went 11-for-12 from the foul line, including 7-of-8 in the final 40 seconds of the game.
"When Jeremy makes his first shot, we know he is going to have a solid night," remarked Doty. "When his confidence is high he is a dominating player in the Heart."
The Wildcats had four players record double-digits tonight as Javeion Gray led the way with 16 points. Daniel Young contributed 14 points, as Clae Martin and Tyree Peter added 12 and 11 points, respectively.
The men's basketball team will play next at home on January 14th against Avila University. The game is set for a 4 p.m. start. It is Ken and Cindy McClain Day and the South Central Iowa Energizers will perform at halftime of the game.
