Mark Fink is beginning to show he is a top contender, as he birdied the first three holes the second day. Fink turned in a 12-over, 156 (79-77). Logan Currin and Andy Rumbaugh rounded out the Yellowjacket five some with scores of 158 (79-79) and 165 (79, 76).
Head Coach Kevin Brunner had the following to say about the men's performance:
"Good opening scores to start the year. Our scores this weekend were an improvement from last year which is good because we lost two of our top five players from last year. We improved the second day by 7 strokes. I am excited by the possibilities of this team. When I talked to 4 of the 5 players they were under par at some point during the round. That says a lot about the potential of the team but it also says a lot about what we need to do to improve. If we can focus for all 18 holes, then we can be competitive at the top."
In women's action, Hannah Gordon finished in 15th place, with a score card of 32-over, 176 (91-85). Jenna Cole turned in a 189 (94-95), good for 20th overall. Both played steady throughout the weekend and had several stretches of good golf.
Julia Austin had a few rough spots, but was hitting some good shots as she finished with a score card of 205 (100-105). "Caitlyn McNabb continues to remain positive and will never give up on making improvements, as she turned in a 226 (120, 106).
Coach Brunner stated the following about the women's showing:
"I believe the first tournament was all about the experience. The team is composed of three freshmen and one sophomore. This weekend we gained some quality time in college competition and as the girls suggested it really was not that different than other competition. I was excited by what I saw. There were a lot of good shots and when we settle down and play, I believe we will be competitive. I expect that we will improve each time we play this fall and we will continue to show progress in the spring. This is a good group of women and I think they will dedicate themselves to bringing the Yellowjackets to a new height."
The men's team returns to action Sept. 15 at the Graceland Invitational, while the women will next play in the Graceland Invitational on Sept. 17.
