Des Moines, IA - The Graceland men's and women's track and field teams were in Des Moines, IA to participate in the 2016 Heart of America Conference Meet this weekend hosted by Grand View University.
The men's team placed 2nd at Conference and the women placed 7th.
"There was a lot of big ups and downs on the day," said head coach Reece Vega. "On the Women's side we knew we were going to have a tough day two based on the point spread. Our team doesn't have the depth to be a top conference school yet, but we are excited to see that change next year. The women did a fantastic job this year and we all are extremely proud of them."
"I have never seen a men's team come up so big at Conference as ours did today." "At the beginning of the meet we were not expected to be a top 3 team. But as the meet went on, things changed quickly. One huge performance was lead by another, then another and it didn't stop. Julain White, Tirrell Brooks, Michael Torres, and the 4x400 were all big event winners on day two. But, this 2nd place team finish wasn't just because of one or two people. The whole mens team rallied around each other and it was great to see. Congrats men, what a big accomplishment for you all!"
Julian White wins the Decathlon with a National Qualifying mark of 6,311 points. This was also a stadium record and currently will rank him in the top 10 in the Nation.
Michael Torres won the Men's 400 meter dash with season best time of 48.60 seconds.
Tirrell Brooks won the Men's 110 hurdles with a time of 15.02 seconds which is .02 off the qualifying standard. Brooks also placed second the long jump the first day and sixth in the high jump, giving him 20 points for the team alone.
Montae Spiller was the runner up in the Men's 100 meter dash with a personal record of 10.89 seconds.
Spiller, Torres, Brooks, and Tyrell Hemingway teamed up in the 4x100 relays to also be runner ups. They ran a season best time of 42.58 seconds.
