Lawrence, KS - The Graceland men and women's golf teams competed in day two of the Ottawa Invitational today hosted by Ottawa University. The Tournament was held at Eagle Bend Golf Course. The course is a par 72 with 6,984 yards. The weather conditions today were very rainy so the second day was shortened to nine holes.
The Yellowjacket men finished the day with a team score of 155. When combined with their day one total of 311 this gave them a total team score of 466 to end the invitational in fifth place. The women did not have enough members to compete as a team so they competed on the individual level.
On the men's side Kansas City Kansas CC got off to a good start on day one and would ultimately take the top spot, coming in with a 447 team score to hold a one stroke lead over Des Moines Area CC who came second place in with a team score of 448.
"We had perfect opening day weather for the spring season," said Head Coach Kevin Brunner. "The first day was 70 degrees with practically no wind. The second day was a different story. The wind picked up and the temperature dropped from 60 to 50. The rain started as we tried to finish the last few holes and then lightning forced us to leave the course. The tournament concluded with only 27 holes so it was shortened a little bit.
"I was pleased with our first tournament performance," continued Coach Brunner. "Our scoring average last fall was 311 and our first round of the season as 311. I feel good that if we can pick up where we left off then we can make strides to improve and get our scoring average closer to 300."
For the women Pachanok Rahulpan of Dodge City CC came in first place with a two day score of 113, just five strokes ahead of second place finisher Ashley Dumler of Des Moines C.C.
"We only had three players for the tournament so we could not score as a team," ended Coach Brunner. "I was happy to see improvements for all three ladies that played. I think we would have been able to shoot one of our better scores if we had a full team."
The Yellowjacket golf teams will return to action on March 25, taking part in the Graceland Invitational.
