Newton, KS - The Graceland men's and women's tennis teams were on the road Friday-Sunday participating in the ITA Regionals on the campus of Bethel College.

Both teams were successful in the weekend tournament. For the women Katherine Rodriguez and Melynda Simmons lost in the semifinal round in the singles bracket. They were paired together and lost a close match in the semifinals of the doubles bracket to Evangel University. Evangel went on to grab the victory in the championship match.

The men had an impressive tournament with five Jacket players making it to the round of 16. Three GU players went on to qualify for the quarterfinals.

Raul Mendez and David Uquillas lost in the semifinals of the singles bracket. Mendez and Juan Jose Mateus were paired up to compete in the doubles bracket defeating the #1 and #5 seeds to take the championship title.

Mendez and Mateus qualify for an automatic bid to the National Tournament in Mobile, Alabama. They will compete October 11th-14th with the other seven top teams in the nation.

"I am very happy with how both teams competed this weekend," stated head coach Monroe Walker III. "Our team is young but we were able to handle the pressure on the big stage.

"We are all looking forward to supporting the guys in the National Tournament."

Mendez and Matues will travel to Mobile, Alabama October 11th-14th to compete in the National Tournament to finish up the fall season.
